Instructions:
Mention about the events that unfolded just before and during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
Solution:
The arrest of popular leaders such as Dr Satyapal and Dr Kitchlu led to outrage in the public, as a result of which a public gathering was announced at the Jallainwala bagh walled compound in Amritsar, Punjab.
It was Baisakhi day that day and being a holiday there were scores of people, children and women who came to visit the public gathering.
It was a peaceful gathering but soon enough General Dyer arrived at the scene and ordered his troops to close the only exit out of the walled compound and open indiscriminate firing at the public.
This resulted in the bloodiest ever incident where 1000 people were killed in the firing and close to 1200 were reported killed.
A Hunter commission was established to investigate the case on behalf of the British Government but they forgave Dyer.
As a result of this incident, Gandhi’s faith towards the British was lost completely and the freedom struggle movement became even more intense across the country.
