Solution:

Bhavanapadu is a fishing village near the coast of Andhra Pradesh. Let’s visit the village and study the life of the people.
  • People in the coastal village of Bhavanapadu are mainly engaged in the Fishing activity, their daily routine starts as early as 4:00 in the morning with little breakfast made of rice.
  • They start their journey as a team of 15-20 members, they go 15-20 km in the sea on a mechanized boat “Marapadava” which is owned by a rich fisherman.
  • The wives of these fishermen go to work in the salt pans and some agricultural work.
  • These fishermen will sell their catch to middlemen, who store it in cold storage and take it to Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kerala, and other parts of the country.
  • There is a huge disparity between the earnings of fishermen and Middleman. The middlemen earn almost four times the money earned by the fisherman.
  • Apart from the big fishing business the fisherman are also engaged in a small-time fishing business which was usually practiced by their wives commonly known as Berakathelu. This time they directly sell their catch without involving any middlemen.
  • As the water near the coastal area is saline so, to fetch fresh drinking water the women will walk up to 2 km.
  • People worship Gangamma, Gowri, and Shiva. The most important festival of the village is Gowri Purnima.
  • People usually wear tattoos, and their major recreational activities are staging, dancing, and watching dramas (Burrakathas, Harikathas).
  • These activities are usually organised by Pillas (The caste headmen)
