Solution

Oxidizing properties of nitric acid (HNO3):

  • Concentrated nitric acid(HNO3) is a powerful oxidizing agent.
  • When non-metals are treated with nitric acid, they get oxidized to their corresponding acids.

Example: Oxidation of sulphur to sulphuric acid

Balanced chemical reaction: S(s)Sulphur+6HNO3(l)NitricacidH2SO4(aq)Sulphuricacid+6NO2(g)Nitrogendioxide+2H2O(l)Water

Example: Oxidation of phosphorous to phosphoric acid

Balanced chemical reaction: P(s)Phosphorous+5HNO3(l)NitricacidH3PO4(aq)Phosphoricacid+5NO2(g)Nitrogendioxide+H2O(l)Water
