Gender plays an important role in the family. From childhood, an individual's role in many families is determined by gender. The kind of games and toys children play with are determined by their gender. In many parts of the country and in many families, even the kind of education and health care received may be determined by gender. Boys may get better food, education and health care than girls. Such distinctions that are created in childhood have their consequences in adulthood as well in terms of the kind of work people do and the kind of life they lead.
