Printing emerged in China in the Second Century AD. In Europe, a dramatic step in the development of printing was taken by John Gutenburg in the middle of the 15th century.. He discovered Movable Type which is considered as a landmark in the history of printing and of western civilisation. The new printing presses spread like wild fire all over Europe. Many new type of printing machines were invented between 16th and 20th centuries.

Printing broadened the habit of reading among masses as books were easily available at cheap prices.Even the poor could afford to buy books which enhanced their knowledge and idea about many things.Printing also provided a new outlet for artists to explore their own interests in ideas of their choice. The spread of nationalism among people in India became stronger because of the printing.
