  • Tea is an important beverage crop of India.
  • It is grown mainly in Assam, Darjeeling, Nilgiri Hills of South India, some places of Himachal Pradesh and Tarai along the foothills of the Himalayas.
  • It requires hot and humid climate.
  • Ideal temperature for the growth of tea plants is 20 to 30 degrees Celsius.
  • Annual rainfall required for its growth is around 150-300 cm.
  • The virgin forest soil which is rich in humus is supposed to be the best for the cultivation of tea plants.
  • Its harvesting requires cheap and skilled labour for plucking the leaves of tea plants.
  • Tea plants are usually planted on the hill slopes where shade loving plants are also planted prior to sowing the tea plants.
