Havelis were grand buildings where the Mughal aristocracy lived during the 17th and 18th centuries. The Mughal aristocrats provided patronage to artists, singers, dancers, poets and craftsment from their havelis. As a result, a very rich and refined culture grew up in Mughal cities like Delhi around these havelis. However, when the Mughal empire started declining in the 18th century, the aristocrats lost their ability to provide patronage. Hence, the haveli culture started declining from the 18th century.
