Rain-water harvesting technique is used to capture and store rain-water by making special water harvesting structures so that there is an increase in the recharge of underground water resources.
The following are the advantages of rainwater harvesting:
(i) It reduces the runoff loss of rainwater.
(ii) It is helpful in controlling floods.
(iii) It affords to maintain a supply of water during the dry months of the year.
(iv) It can be used to raise the water table.
(v) It also helps in placing a check on soil erosion.
Rain-water harvesting can be possible by the following means:
(i) Storing water in above-ground ponds and reservoirs.
(ii) Storing water by making deep pits, wells, lagoons or trenches on small streams.
(iii) Recharging the groundwater by throwing the rain-water down into the underground aquifers.
