Open in App
Solution

Blood pressure

  1. It is the pressure that the blood gives against the wall of a blood vessel.
  2. It varies according to the contraction and relaxation of the heart muscles.

Systolic pressure

  1. It is the pressure of the blood against the wall of the arteries when the heart muscles contract and push the blood into the arteries.
  2. During this time, the first heart sound is noted as the Lubb sound.
  3. It is measured as 120 mm of Hg in a healthy person and is written as the first number in the notation of blood pressure.

Diastolic pressure

  1. It is the pressure of the blood against the wall of the arteries when the heart rests between beats of the heart which means heart muscles relax.
  2. During this time, the second heart sound is noted as the Dub sound.
  3. It is measured as 80 mm of Hg in a healthy person and is written as the second number in the blood pressure notation.

Thus, a healthy person approximately has 120/80 mm of Hg blood pressure. Anything above then the standard notation is considered high blood pressure and anything below the standard notation is considered low blood pressure.
