Cell division:

  1. It is the process used by cells to produce genetically identical copies of themselves.
  2. Cell division is of two major types i.e mitosis and meiosis.

Mitosis:

  1. It is a type of cell division where the number of chromosomes remains identical even after the cell division.
  2. It occurs in the somatic cells of the body.
  3. For example: If the parent cell has 46 number of chromosomes, then the two cells formed after division will also have 46 chromosomes each.

Meiosis:

  1. It is a type of cell division where the number of chromosomes become half after the cell division.
  2. It occurs in the germ cells of the body.
  3. For example: If the parent cell has 46 number of chromosomes, then the two cells formed after division will have 23 chromosomes each.
