The latitudinal extent is 12 degrees north to 55 degrees south and the longitudinal extent is 35 degrees west to 81 degrees west. The continent has a triangular shape. It is wide in the north and narrows towards the south.
South America has 12 countries and 3 dependent territories. Brazil is the largest country, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname are the 12 countries. In the northeast corner, there is French Guiana which is a dependent territory and it belongs to France. Two other dependent territories are the Falkland islands, Georgia, and southern Sandwich islands and they belong to the United Kingdom.
