The Indian Constitution provides for an independent and powerful body in the form of Election Commission. It is an autonomous body, independent of any governmental control.The President of India appoints the Chief Election Commission (CEC).
This has been done so that elections are held in a free and fair manner.The Election Commission consists of the Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners.

The functions of Election Commission of India are as follows:

1. Demarcation of Constituencies.
2. Preparation of Electoral Rolls.
3. Recognition of Political parties and allotment of symbols.
4. Scrutiny of nomination papers.
5. Conduct of polls.
6. Scrutiny of election expense of candidates
