• With the arms race, the USA and USSR owned huge amounts of nuclear weapons and knew very well that neither would be the winner in the nuclear war. They changed their strategy and formed military and strategic alliances.
• The United States formalised its alliance in an organisation known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or NATO in 1949.
• The USSR formed an alliance with all the communist nations and signed the Warsaw Pact to counter NATO.
• The US also established regional military and strategic alliances like the South East Asian Treaty Organisation (SEATO) and Central Treaty Organisation (CENTO).
