Myelin is an insulating layer, or sheath that covers the nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord.
It is composed of protein and fatty substances.
It allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells.
If myelin is damaged, these impulses get slowed down.
There are two different types of myelin sheath, the CNS myelin and the PNS myelin.
CNS myelin is produced by specialized cells called oligodendrocytes.
Whereas, PNS myelin is produced by Schwann cells.
Both types of myelin are chemically different, but perform the same function i.e., to facilitate efficient transmission of a nerve impulse along the axon.
