Solution

  • IUCN or The International Union of Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources which has categorised the rare species of plants and animals for conservation purpose.
  • IUCN Red list or red data list was founded in 1964.
  • It uses a set of criteria to evaluate the extinction risk of thousands of species and sub- species.
  • These criteria are relevant to all species and all the regions of the world.
  • Based on it following categories have been identified :-
1) Endangered species :- which are in danger of extinction and which may not survive if the adverse factors continue.
2) Vulnerable species :- which are likely to move into endangered category in near future if the adverse conditions continue to operate.
3) Rare species :- which have a very small population in the world. These at present are neither endangered or vulnerable but are at risk.
4) Threatened species :- term used in the context of conservation of species which are in any one of the above categories.
