Dear Student
The Rowlatt Act passed by the British Government in 1919, provided the colonial government the power to imprison and convict anyone without trial. This Act gave the government a lot of power to supress political activities during that time by detaining political prisoners without trial thereby violating the basic rights and civil liberties of the people. This Act was passed despite the opposition of a huge number of Indian nationalists. Mahatma Gandhi also called for the Rowlatt Satyagraha as a protest against this legislation. These acts were later repealed.
