Time zone: A time zone is a region spanning a range of longitudes that observes a common standard time for almost all purposes.

Need for time zones: There are countries such as Russia, the USA, Canada, etc where the longitudinal extent is quite large. Therefore, there is often a difference of three to four hours between one region and the other in these countries. Here the land surface is divided into time zones. The whole globe is divided into 24 such time zones so that the time in each zone differs from the other by only one hour. The times in these zones are coordinated with respect to the prime meridian. These time zones have been created with reference to the Prime Meridian itself. For instance, Russia has 11 time zones, USA and Canada have 5 time zones.
