Solution

Accessory glands of man:

  • The glands that release their secretions into the digestive tract for the breakdown of food are called accessory glands.
  • Apart from food digestion, accessory glands perform other functions too, like facilitating the movement of digested food through the digestive tract.

The various accessory glands of the human digestive system are:

1. Salivary glands:

  1. There are three pairs of salivary glands located in the mouth region.
  2. These glands secrete saliva into the oral cavity that contains mucus and salivary amylase enzyme.
  3. Salivary secretions help in the breakdown of starch into simple carbohydrates.
  4. The mucus in the saliva makes the chewed food moist, which facilitates its easy passage through the food pipe.

2. Pancreas:

  1. It is a small pear-shaped gland located below the stomach.
  2. It secretes pancreatic juice into the small intestine that contains enzymes to digest proteins and fats.

3. Liver:

  1. The liver is the largest gland in the human body, located below the chest on the right side of the body.
  2. It synthesizes bile juice which is stored in the gallbladder and released into the small intestine during the time of digestion.
  3. Bile juice helps in the emulsification of fats.
