Solution

When ferrous sulphate crystals are heated it loses its water of crystallisation. Thus changed to dirty yellow anhydrous FeSO4On further heating it changed into reddish brown iron (III) oxide releasing SO2 (found by its smell) and white fumes of SO3.FeSO4. 7 H2O FeSO4 + 7 H2O2 FeSO4 Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3When lead nitrate crystals are heated it forms yellow residue of lead oxide with reddish brown gas liberation NO2 which turns moist blue litmus paper red.The other gas liberated is oxygen which rekindles the burning splinter2 Pb(NO3)2 2 PbO + 4 NO2 + O2
