Write answer the following questions.
(a) When water is the largest resource, why can so little of it be used for drinking and agriculture?
(b) What is meant by ground water?
(c) What are the different forms in which we find water on the earth?
(d) How is salt obtained from sea water in salt pans?
(a) Water is the most abundant natural source on the Earth by volume. However, most of the water is present in seas and oceans. The sea and ocean water contains a high amount of salt and therefore, cannot be used for drinking and agriculture.
(b) The water that is found under the surface of the Earth and is responsible for the presence of water in the wells, tube wells, and springs is called ground water.
(c) Water on the Earth is found in three different forms - solid, liquid and gas. The water in lakes and rivers is found in liquid form. In polar regions and atop mountains, it is in a solid form as ice and in the air it is found in a gaseous form as vapour.
(d) Salt is obtained from sea water, by the process of evaporation. The sea water is collected in small dykes called salt pans constructed along the sea shore, which prevent a backflow of water into the sea. The water in these salt pans evaporates by the Sun’s heat and a layer of salt is left behind. The salt is collected and sent to factories for refining.
