(a) In conduction, heat is transferred by the molecules of the medium. So, a medium is necessary for conduction.

(b) In a pond, surface water is exposed to direct sunlight, so the upper layers of water become warm. These warm layers are lighter, so they remain at the same place. Hence, upper layers of water in a pond are warmer.

(c) Heat is transferred by radiation near the bonfire. So, it feels warm near a bonfire.

(d) Radiation is thwarted by the shiny surfaces in a thermos flask.
