Solution

(a) The materials and components that are found in the natural form in the environment and that can be used for economic gain are called natural resources. For example, wood, coal, natural gas, water, and minerals are natural resources.

(b) The two types of natural resources are: non- renewable natural resources and renewable natural resources. Non- renewable natural resources are the resources that take millions of years to form naturally and therefore cannot be replaced once they are exhausted. For example, coal, petroleum and natural gas. Renewable natural resources are the resources that can be produced again and again with the passage of time. For example, air, water and solar energy.

(c) Soil is an important natural resource. It is used for growing plants, food crops and for various construction purposes. It also serves as home for many living organisms.

(d) Nulla bunding is the method of soil conservation that is used to prevent soil erosion caused by flowing water in slopes. In this method, lateral shallow trenches are dug at regular intervals across the sloping land. The flowing water collects in these deep trenches and seeps slowly into the soil. The loose top layer of soil also gets deposited into these trenches along with the flowing water and thus prevents the washing away of the soil. This technique is used to grow various crops.

(e) Biotechnology refers to the technology that uses biological application. This plays an important role in agriculture, the food processing industry, medicine diagnostics and waste treatment. With the help of biotechnology, it is now possible to reproduce plants and animals in the laboratory. It is also possible to transfer specific genes from one organism to other and develop plants and animals with desired characteristics.

(f)

Renewable resources

Non renewable resources

Renewable resources can be used again and again.

Non renewable resources can be used for a limited period of time.

Renewable resources are replenished within the short period of time.

Non renewable resources take either much longer time to form or cannot be produced again.

Renewable resources have high rate of formation than the consumption.

Non renewable resources have low rate of formation than the consumption.

For example, air, water, solar energy, etc.

For example, coal, petroleum, etc.
