Question

Write balanced chemcal equations for the formation of acid rain.

Open in App
Solution

Sulphur dioxide + water sulphurous acid + hydrogen
SO2+3H2OH2SO3+2H2
Sulphur trioxide + water sulphuric acid
SO3+H2OH2SO4
Nitrogen dioxide + water Nitric acid + hydrogen
2NO2+2H2O2HNO3+H2
As the carbonic acid, formed by
CO2, is a very weak acid, and the composition of CO2in the air is only approximately 0.03%, its effect on our environment is negligible. It is only the man-made compounds of SO2, and NO2 are the main culprits for acid rain.
