Question

Write balanced chemical equation for the following:
(i) Monochloro ethane is hydrolysed with aqueous KOH.
(ii) A mixture of sodalime and sodium acetate is heated.
(iii) Ethanol under high pressure and low temperature is treated with acidified potassium dichromate.
(iv) Water is added to calcium carbide.
(v) Ethanol reacts with sodium at room temperature.

Solution

(i) When monochloroethane is hydrolysed with aqueous KOH, ethanol is obtained. The balanced chemical equation is:

C2H5ClMonochloroethane+KOHaqueousC2H5OHEthanol+KCl

(ii) When a mixture of sodalime and sodium acetate is heated, methane is obtained. The balanced chemical equation is:

CH3COONaSodium acetate+NaOH CaO CH4Methane+Na2CO3

(iii) When ethanol under high pressure and low temperature is treated with acidified potassium dichromate, ethanoic acid is obtained. The balanced chemical equation is:

C2H5OHEthanol K2Cr2O7/H+ O CH3CHO Ethanal O CH3COOHEthanoic acid

(iv) When water is added to calcium carbide, ethyne is obtained. The balanced chemical equation is:

CaC2Calcium carbide+2H2OC2H2Ethyne+CaOH2

(v) When ethanol reacts with sodium at room temperature, sodium ethanoate is obtained. The balanced chemical equation is:

2C2H5OHEthanol+2Na2C2H5ONaSodium ethanoate+H2
