Question

Write balanced chemical equation for the following:

Iron is reacted with conc. Sulphuric acid

Open in App
Solution

Step 1:

Concentrated Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) acts as an oxidising agent and Iron (Fe) is oxidised to Ferric sulphate (Fe2(SO4)3) and sulphuric acid is oxidised to Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and water (H2O).

Step 2:

The reaction is given as:

Fe(s)+conc.H2SO4(aq)Fe2(SO4)3(s)+SO2(aq)+H2O(l)IronSulphuricFerricSulphurWateracidsulphatedioxide

The above equation is not balanced as there are two iron atoms, four sulphur atoms, fifteen oxygen atoms and two hydrogen atoms on the product side. Whereas there are one iron atom, one sulphur, four oxygen and two hydrogen atoms on reactant side.

Therefore, this reaction can be balanced as:

2Fe(s)+6H2SO4(aq)Fe2(SO4)3(s)+3SO2(aq)+6H2O(l)
