Question

Write balanced chemical equations for the following:

Water is added to Sodium aluminate and heated

Open in App
Solution

Part A: Writing Given reaction

The reaction of a compound with water is known as hydrolysis.

On hydrolysis of Sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) in presence of heat, we get a precipitate of Aluminium hydroxide (Al(OH)3)and Sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

NaAlO2+H2OAl(OH)3+NaOHSodiumAluminiumSodiumAluminateHydroxideHydroxide

Part B: Balancing Given reaction

Step 1 : Balancing the Hand Oatoms

The above equation is not balanced. Since there are four H atoms on the product side and only two on the reactant side. Similarly, there are three oxygen atoms on the reactant side and four on the product so we write two before .H2O.

NaAlO2+2H2OAl(OH)3+NaOH

Step 2 : Balanced equation

Therefore, the balanced equation is:

NaAlO2+2H2OAl(OH)3+NaOH
