Question

Write balanced chemical reaction between Magnesium metal with steam .

Open in App
Solution

Reaction between Magnesium (Mg) and water (H2O)

  • Magnesium metal reacts with steam to form Magnesium oxide (MgO) and Hydrogen gas (H2) is liberated.
  • Metals that lie topmost in the reactivity series react with cold water, metals that lie a bit below react with hot water while metals that lie in the lower middle order react with steam.
  • Magnesium does not react with cold water because magnesium is coated with insoluble Magnesium hydroxide, which inhibits water from coming into contact with it.

Mg(s)Magnesium+H2O(g)SteamMgO(s)Magnesiumoxide+H2(g)Hydrogen
