Question

Write critical notes on the following:

(a) Eutrophication

(b) Biological magnification

(c) Ground water depletion and ways for its replenishment

Open in App
Solution

(a) Eutrophication is caused by excessive richness of nutrients in a lake due to run off from lands which causes dense growth of plants

(b) Biological magnification is the increase in concentration of toxic substances such as DDT in subsequent trophic levels.

(c) Ground water depletion and ways for its replenishment

Ground water has been extensively used for irrigation, industrial use, infrastructure building and even for household use. This has lead to serious reduction of underground water tables.

Replenishment

(i) Rainwater harvesting making traps so that rainwater does not go down the drains but is directed towards largs pits dug up underground.

(ii) Drainage wells can be made to collect drainage water from agricultural and idustrial runoff. It may be treated to remove toxic substances before being allowed to seep underground.
