Degradable Pollutants

Non−Degradable pollutants

The substances which can be broken down (degraded) into simple forms by the action of microbes are known as degradable pollutants. This is done by the action of enzymes secreted by microbes.

The substances which cannot be broken down (degraded) into simple forms by the action of microbes are known as non−degradable pollutants.

Degradable pollutants do not persist in the environment for long period of time

Non−degradable pollutants persist in environment for long period of time.

Degradable pollutants cause pollution to a lesser extent and are less harmful.

As non−degradable pollutants are never removed from the environment, they cause excessive pollution and are harmful.

Biodegradable can be used for making manure by collecting them in a pit and allowing them to decay. So, they can be useful.

Non−biodegradable cannot be used for making manure.

Example: Animal wastes, remains of dead plants and animals
