Primary metabolism - is a process that occurs in all living cell and is essential for the survival of the cell

Secondary metabolism - It is a parallel or a derived process from primary metabolism. Not necessary for the survival of the cell. It need not be the same in all cells nor in all organisms.

Example: Resin, tannins, essential oils etc synthesized by certain species of plants
