Radiocarbon is used for the estimation of the age of fossils. It is also used for the estimation of the age of archaeological specimens. Thus radiocarbon is used in carbon dating and rock dating. The ratio of $C_{14}$ to $C_{12}$ activities is used in the fresh sample and in the dead sample.
