  • The Gonds lived in Gondwanaland, that literally means country inhabited by the Gonds
  • They practiced shifting cultivation
  • The tribe was divided into several clans, each with a Raja of its own
  • Later on, the kingdoms was divided into Garh with one clan looking after one Garh

The Mughal considered Garha Katanga a rich state because it had 70,000 villages. The state earned wealth by trapping and selling elephants to other kingdoms. Therefore, when Mughals conquered Garha Katanga they received a large booty of coins and elephants.
