Solution

  1. When concentrated nitric acid is treated with copper the copper gets oxidized. The pinkish red metal dissolves in nitric acid to give a blue coloured solution of copper nitrate and a reddish brown coloured gas of nitrogen dioxide.

Cu(s)copper+4HNO3(l)concnitricacidCu(NO3)2(s)copper(III)nitrate+2NO2(g)nitrogendioxide+2H2Owater

b). Sodium nitrate on heating decomposes to produce sodium nitrite and colourless and odourless oxygen gas
.2NaNO3(s)2NaNO2(s)+O2(g)sodiumsodiumoxygengasnitratenitrite
