Question

Write down the reaction involved in preparation of Potassium dichromate from chromine ore.

Open in App
Solution

Following step reactions are involved in preparation of K2Cr2O7 from Chromite ore (FeCr2O4)
I. Formation of Na2CrO4 (sodium chromate)
4FeCr2O4+16NaOH+7O28Na2CrO4+2Fe2O3+8H2O
II. Conversion of Na2CrO4 to Na2Cr2O7
2Na2CrO4 +conc.H2SO4 Na2Cr2O7 + Na2SO4 H2O
III. Conversion of Na2Cr2O7 to K2Cr2O7
Na2Cr2O7 +2KCl K2Cr2O7 +2 NaCl.
Since the solubility of KCl is less than NaCl, so, K2Cr2O7 is obtained in form of orange crystals and the former can be removed by filtration.
