$$\begin{gathered} \mathrm{Let}\mathrm{the}\mathrm{number}\mathrm{be}\mathrm{m} \\ \mathrm{So},\frac{2}{5}\mathrm{th}\mathrm{of}\mathrm{the}\mathrm{number}\mathrm{is}\frac{2\mathrm{m}}{5} \\ \frac{2\mathrm{m}}{5}\mathrm{is}17\mathrm{less}\mathrm{than}\mathrm{the}\mathrm{number}\mathrm{itself}.\mathrm{So},\mathrm{the}\mathrm{required}\mathrm{equation}\mathrm{is} \\ \frac{2\mathrm{m}}{5}=\mathrm{m}-17 \\ \Rightarrow 2\mathrm{m}=5\mathrm{m}-85 \\ \Rightarrow 3\mathrm{m}-85=0 \end{gathered}$$
