Respiration is the process of releasing energy by breaking down food (glucose) needed for various body activities.
Respiration is a biological process in which an organism's cells obtain energy by mixing oxygen and glucose and emitting carbon dioxide, water, and ATP (the currency of energy in cells).
There are two types of respiration:
Aerobic respiration:
The process of liberation of energy during the oxidation of food molecules in presence of oxygen is known as aerobic respiration.
Aerobic respiration follows the following equation: C6H12O6 + O2 ⇢ CO₂ + H2O +ATP. (Glucose) (oxygen) (carbon dioxide)
Anaerobic respiration:
The cellular respiration that takes place in absence of oxygen is known as anaerobic respiration.
Anaerobic respiration follows the following equation : C6H12O6 ⇢ C2H5OH + CO₂ + Energy(ATP). (Glucose) (ethanol) (carbon dioxide)
