Carbon and its compounds are used in a large number of operations in and around us. The most common form of carbon that we have all seen and used is the lead of the pencil, which is nothing but graphite (a form of carbon). Another form of carbon, commonly in use, is diamond, which is used in jewelry. Carbon is also the basis of fuels such as coal and oil since both coal and oil are rich in carbon.Carbon as graphite is a good lubricant. Carbon is a key component of steel.
Carbon combines with some metals to make carbides such as tungsten carbide. Tungsten carbide is very, very hard and durable. This makes it desirable as tips for cutting tools such as drill bits. Carbon as diamond is one of the hardest known materials and diamond is an excellent abrasive.
Activated carbon (also called activated charcoal) is a form of processed carbon that is extremely porous and with very large surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions.
As carbon dioxide, it can be found in dry ice, fire extinguishers, carbonated and fizzy drinks.
