Solution

  • An element is a substance that is made up of only one kind of atom, and cannot be split using any chemical means.
  • Elements are majorly of three types - metals, non--metals, or noble gases.
  • Metals are those elements that have an excess of electrons in their valence shell, which they can donate easily and Hence, conducts electricity.
  • Non-metals are elements that accept or gain electrons to generate negative ions. The outermost shell of non-metals normally has 4, 5, 6, or 7 electrons.
  • Noble gases are those elements that do not have a tendency to either gain or donate electrons. These elements have a fully filled valence shell.
  • When one or more atoms of the same or different elements combine with each other chemically, a compound is formed.

The categorization of the following compound is as follows -

(i) Chlorine : Non-metal

(ii) Calcium carbonate : Compound

(iii) Magnesium : Metal

(iv) Potassium : Metal

(v) Argon : Noble gases

(vi) Sodium chloride : Compound

(vii) Carbon dioxide : Compound

(vii) Hydrogen : Non-metal

(ix) Silicon : Non-metal

(x) Lead : Metal
