• The smooth muscles that are attached to the hair which are responsible for their movement are arrector pilli. They extend from the superficial dermis of the skin to the dermal root sheath around the side of the hair follicle. In its normal position, hair emerges at an angle to a surface of the skin. But under the certain condition like stress, cold etc the nerve ending stimulate the pilli muscles to contract which pulls the hair shafts perpendicular to the skin surface. This action is called goosebumps. When the impulse is not present their anymore than the pili retracts and the hair goes back to its flattened position on the skin.
