Question

Write net ionic equations for the following qualitative analysis procedures:
(a) Precipitation of PbCl2(s) from a solution containing Pb2+(aq)
(b) Dissolving of Zn(OH)2(s) in NaOH(aq).
(c) Dissolving of Fe(OH)3(s) in HCl(aq).
(d) Precipitation of antimony sulphide from a solution containing H2S and the complex ion SbCl4.

Solution

(a)Lead(II) ions react with chloride ions to form precipitate of lead dichloride.
Pb2+(aq)+2Cl(aq)PbCl2(s)
(b) Zinc hydroide reacts with hydroxide ions to form soluble zincate ion.
Zn(OH)2(s)+2OH(aq)ZnO22(aq)+2H2O(l)
(c)Ferric hydroxide on acidification gives Fe(III) ions.
Fe(OH)3(s)+3H+(aq)Fe3+(aq)+3H2O(l)
(d)Hydrogen sulphide gas reacts with solution containing SbCl4 to form a precipitate of antimony sulphide.
2SbCl4(aq)+3H2S(aq)Sb2S3(s)+6H+(aq)+8Cl(aq)
