India is a vast country. which lies in Northern hemisphere. The mainland extends between latitudes 8°4’N and 37°6’N and longitudes 68°7’E and 97°25’E. The Tropic of Cancer (23° 30’N) passes in between dividing the country into two equal halves. To the southeast in Bay of Bengal, lies the group of islands , that is, Andaman and Nicobar islands . The Lakshadweep lies in the South west in Arabian Sea.

India has an area of 3.28 million square km. The mainland of India extends between latitudes 8 degree 4' n and 37 degree 6' N and longitudes 68 degreen 7' e and 97 degree 25 ' E. The land boundary of India is 15, 200 kms. The length of the coast line is 7,516.6 km. The latitudinal extent influences the duration of the day and night, as one moves from south to north. The narrow channel of sea formed by the Palkj Strait and the Gulf of Mannar separates India and Srilanka.
