Solution

(a) Adulteration of Food

Adulteration of food is to make the food impure or unfit to eat by adding foreign substances to it. For example, the addition of sand, marbles in the pulses or the addition of starch in milk. The intake of adulterated food can cause severe illness. So, before buying any food item, it should be checked that it is safe from any adulteration. Adulteration can be detected by performing a simple test using certain chemicals that are easily available in the market such as the presence of washing powder in the ice cream can be detected by adding small amount of lemon juice to the ice cream. The appearance of bubbles confirms the presence of washing powder in the ice cream sample. Likewise the presence of starch in the milk can be detected by adding 2-3 drops of iodine solution in small quantity of milk. The appearance of blue colour confirms the presence of starch and the appearance of coffee colour shows that the milk is pure.

(b) Use of refrigerators

Refrigerators are used to preserve food at low temperatures. The temperature inside the refrigerators is around 5°C. Microbes cannot grow at such low temperatures hence, the quality and quantity of food is maintained when stored in refrigerators.

(c) Cold stores

Cold stores are used to preserve food items in large quantity. These stores have extremely low temperatures and need proper maintenance.
