Solution

(a) The water suitable for drinking is called potable water. The water that we obtain from various sources may not be safe for drinking. It may contain various harmful microorganisms and salts, which may cause health problems. In water treatment plants, various processes are used to make water safe for drinking (potable). The impurities are removed by the process of filtration. The salts are removed by the process of evaporation, and also chlorine is added to water for disinfection. This process is called chlorination. The Government of India is spending lots of money to make water potable and available for all. Thus, we must take care that this water does not get wasted.

(b) Water management is the planned activity of developing, distributing and limiting the amount of water utilized for all activities. Almost three-fourths of the Earth's surface is occupied by water but only 3% of it is available as fresh water that can be used for drinking and other purposes. Thus, water is a precious and limited resource. However, as a result of over utilization and negligence on the part of humans, a considerable amount of it is wasted. Thus, to find a solution for water crises, we should take following measures:

1. Use water sparingly at a personal level - for bathing, shaving and washing clothes.

2. Reuse water after the suitable treatment rather than wasting it.

3. Replenish the sources of water by methods such as rain water harvesting.

4. Reopen old blocked wells.

5. Use modern irrigation methods such as drip irrigation to irrigate crop fields.

(c) The process by which rain water is collected and stored either to recharge the ground water or for use in the future is known as rain water harvesting.

The rain water from the building roofs is collected and drained into ground reservoirs through pipes for utilization in the future. The collected rain water can also be allowed to seep into the ground. This helps in replenishing the underground water reservoirs.
