Following are the major sectors in a rural economy:

i. Fisheries: This sector is related to fishing. It is growing continuously as new methods of fishing are used along with the introduction of processed fish products.
ii. Horticulture: This sector is related to plant cultivation. Horticulture business is flourishing in India due to the diversity of climate and soil.
iii. Sericulture: This business is related to the production of silk. It is mostly developed in the southern part of India.
iv. Jute business: This business is related to the production of jute products. Jute is the main product of rural India which is exported and fetches the maximum foreign exchange.
v. Tea business: This business is concerned with the production of tea and is mostly produced in the north-eastern and southern states of Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
vi. Poultry business: This business is related to the production of meat and eggs. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala are the major contributors to the poultry business.
vii. Rubber business: Production of rubber takes place in the Malabar Coast in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and southwest Konkan.
