Solution

Acid rain: Acid rain is caused when the oxides of nitrogen and sulphur precipitate from the rain water. These oxides are present in the upper atmosphere and when rain falls, these oxides get dissolved in rain water and form nitric acid and sulphuric acid; thus, making it acidic. Acid rain usually has a pH of less than 5.6.

It can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals as well as on the infrastructure. Following are the harmful effects of acid rain:

• Increases soil acidity and thereby making it unfit for other agricultural purposes

• Causes respiratory ailments in humans

• Affects aquatic ecosystem

• Corrodes water pipes resulting in leaching of heavy metals in drinking water

• Damages buildings made up of stone and metal
