They produce general or local insensibility to pain and other sensation.
Anaesthetics include general anaesthetics and local anaesthetics.
General anaesthetics produce unconciousness and are used for major surgery.
Nitrous oxide, cyclopropane and ethylene are general anaesthetics.
Local anaesthetics are applied to a particular body part where they produce loss of sensation. They are used for minor operations. Procain, ethyl chloride and xylocain are local anaesthetics.
