Eutrophication.
Eutrophication: It is the presence of excess nutrients in water bodies. Release of nutrient−rich sewage and industrial effluents leads to introduction of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus into the water body. This leads to the increase in temperature and oxygen demand of the water body, causing increased biological activity, thereby leading to algal blooms. This algal bloom covers the water surface, secretes toxins and reduces oxygen content of water. Oxygen deficiency may cause the death of aquatic animals.
