Question

write similarities and differences in electroplating and electrorefining.

Open in App
Solution

1) The process of depositing a layer of any desired metal on another material by means of electricity is called electroplating. The metal to be electroplated is made the cathode, while the anode is the other metal which has to be deposited on this metal. After passing electric current through the electrolyte, the metal from the anode is deposited on the cathode. It may be defined as copper plating or silver plating etc on the basis of metal which is used for plating of other metal. It is most commonly used for protection of reactive metal surface from reaction of atmosphere.

2) The process of refining a metal in an electrolytic cell is known as electrorefining. Purified metal strip is used as cathode. Impure metal rod is used as anode. On passing current through the electrolyte, the impure metal from the anode is deposited on the cathode. It is used in purification of copper from its ore.

Similarities : Both the methods are used to deposite a layer of metal on cathode.
In both the process, electricity is used as the source of energy.
In both the cases, Cathode is made up of pure metal stripe.

Difference : In electroplating, the metal to be deposited is different from the metal to be choose as cathode.
Electroplating is used for protection of active metal surface. But electrorefining is used for purification of metal.
