Solution

Detergents: Detergents are generally ammonium or sulphonate salts of long-chain carboxylic acids. The charged ends of these compounds do not form insoluble precipitates with the calcium and magnesium ions in water.

Advantages of detergents

  • Detergents form lather easily even with hard water.
  • Detergents are effective even in water-containing salts.
  • More cost-efficient and can remove any stains to a large extent.

Disadvantages of detergents

  • Detergents are non-biodegradable, hence they are not environment friendly.
  • A higher pH level of detergent may cause allergies to the skin.
  • It causes water and soil pollution.
