A mountain goat's wool coat is white, an adaptation that helps it to hide from predators by blending in with its snowy environment. Its coat helps it to withstand winter temperatures as low as-50 °F (-46 °C).
Males and females both have 8 to 10-inch-long, black horns which are curved backward. These horns grow longer and thicker with age. The horns help them in fighting predators.
The hooves can spread apart which helps in climbing steep and rocky slopes. The rubber pads under their soles provide a good grip while climbing.
They have powerful shoulder and neck muscles that help to propel them up the steep slopes.
